The Most Commonly Asked Questions about Fostering

Question: Must I be a certain age to become a foster parent?
Answer: Any individual who is interested in becoming a foster parent must be at least 21 years old.

Question: What will the agency expect from me once I become a foster parent?
Answer: The Salvation Army Children's Services expects foster parents to work as team members with any individual that is involved in the life of the foster child. Relaying important information to agency staff who visit the foster home regularly, attending appointments and meetings regarding the foster child is also expected. Participating in ongoing foster parent training regarding children and adolescent issues is a requirement of all foster parents.

Question: Do I get paid any money for being a foster parent?
Answer: Yes. foster parents get paid at daily rate for the care of each child. The amount of money received depends on the needs of the child. In addition, each child is allotted a certain amount of money for clothing each month and a weekly allowance. The foster parents are expected to purchase clothing and give allowance for each child. Afterwards, receipts and paperwork are submitted to the agency to get reimbursed for those expenses.

Question: Does my home have to meet specific qualifications before I can get foster children?
Answer: Every foster home must meet certain standards, a requirement by the Department of Public Welfare.
